They all arrived at City Park by seven oâclock in the morning. Ruthanne smiled as she stood in their usual prime spot, located under a spreading maple tree, near the beautiful Oakley Creek.
Before unloading, Ruthanne gathered her team of men in a prayer circle where they all held hands. Together they gave thanks for the weather. They also prayed for Hannieâs ministry, that her art pieces would touch those who needed it. Skye prayed a hearty prayer for the two alpacas, that they would remain calm and enjoy the attention they would receive. She squeezed his hand to let him know how grateful she was for that prayer, and when he squeezed back, she had to force herself to concentrate on his words. His palm, even with the newly formed calluses, felt comforting and safe as his thumb stroked her finger in an intimate gesture. Her other hand gripped Paulâs. Just as strong, just as comforting, but evoking no feelings other than the warmth of friendship.
They set up quickly after that, placing Lirit and Shellie, a golden suri with gorgeous Shirley Temple locks, into the portable pen. Walls made of fabric and PVC pipe became the outdoor gallery for the weavings, and Ruthanne decorated with ribbons and straw flowers she had bought in Merrick.
She brought out the cash drawer from her car and set Skye up at a table with a pad of receipts and a credit card machine. She indicated one of the folding chairs theyâd brought. âHave a seat. Holler for Paul or me if you need help with the bigger items.â
âYes, Boss Lady.â
She rolled her eyes, thoroughly enjoying his mock reverence.
âPaul, I know you usually do the selling, but if you can help me field questions about the alpacas, Iâd appreciate it.â
Paul nodded but muttered, âHeâd better not mess anything up.â
âWell, Skye canât answer alpaca questions very well, can he?â Honestly, men and their egos!
âIâll be back after I feed the animals.â Tom excused himself and wandered through the trickle of people who had come out early for the fair.
Ruthanne settled herself behind Hannieâs spinning wheel, which thankfully survived the ride in Skyeâs rented SUV. Before long she had Liritâs carded, washed, and dyed fiber twisting through her fingers. This brought several curious onlookers.
Skyeâs parents dropped by briefly, his mom excited to see the alpacas up close.
During a lull, Ruthanne decided to stand and stretch. She moved near Skye to check the sales receipts and perhaps catch any errors before Paul did. She neednât have worried though. âYouâre doing a great job at pushing the merchandise.â She grinned as she shuffled the thin papers through her fingers.
âThe alpaca toys are an easy sell.â
âYouâve managed to sell some of the larger items, too. Weâre very grateful to have you here in Hannieâs absence.â
âThen I guess I made the right decision to do my thirty days sooner rather than later.â He reached out and caught her wrist, drawing her near.
âA decision that I praise God for every day.â Her heart dipped as she realized their time was growing shorter.
